On Saturday, 22 August, the Burke Shire Council had the immense privilege of hosting the Order of the Outback Ball in Burketown, bringing our community together to celebrate the remarkable people who strengthen the outback. As the proud hosts of this biennial event, we were thrilled to present the Order of the Outback Award to the Isolated Children's Parents Association (ICPA). Katie Brown graciously accepted the honour on behalf of the organisation, delivering a moving address that highlighted the tireless dedication needed to advocate for educational equity and support for families living in remote and regional areas.
Since the Burke Shire Council established the Order of the Outback Ball and its accompanying award back in the 1980s, the tradition has grown into a cornerstone celebration for the region. Over the decades, we have used this platform to honour some of the nation's most devoted champions and community builders. Past recipients include community support groups like BlazeAid and Aussie Helpers, essential health providers such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, cultural fixtures like RM Williams and media personality Ian McNamara, alongside sporting legends like Johnathon Thurston.
The accolade carries deep significance for the bush, serving as our region's way of formally acknowledging the resilience, volunteerism, and grit that keeps remote communities thriving. By recognising organisations like the ICPA, we proudly shine a light on the unique challenges faced by families in isolated regions and celebrate those who bridge vast geographic distances through unwavering advocacy and support.
