The following sections discuss ways to add structure to pieces of text.

Emphasis

The proper HTML elements should be used to mark up emphasis: EM and STRONG. The B and I elements should not be used; they are used to create a visual presentation effect. The EM and STRONG elements were designed to indicate structural emphasis that may be rendered in a variety of ways (font style changes, speech inflection changes, etc.)

Acronyms and abbreviations

Specify the expansion of each abbreviation or acronym in a document where it first occurs.

Mark up abbreviations and acronyms with ABBR and ACRONYM and use "title" to indicate the expansion:

Welcome to the WWW

Quotations

This example marks up a longer quotation with BLOCKQUOTE:

Remuneration! O! that's the Latin word for three farthings. – William Shakespeare (Love's Labor Lost).

Font units

It is important for accessibility that font sizes be assigned in relative units such as ems and/or percentages (%). Pixels are not an ideal unit to set font sizes with as they are able to be increased and decreased in some versions of Internet Explorer.

It is also important to set the line-height in the same manner, preferably ems. This way, when the user increases the font size, the spacing between the each line is increased to match the new font size.

Drop Caps

Apply a larger font size to the first character of a paragraph.Fusce sed porta est. Maecenas eleifend metus eget justo porttitor in ultricies dui rhoncus. Nullam mollis tortor sed tortor euismod vitae convallis lacus posuere!

Another custom style you can choose to use in conjunction with one of the above styles is largepad which will increase the spacing around the image:
